Web Single-Sign On

The Web Single Sign-On Service offers a standard set of authentication and authorization services to web-based applications. It allows web sites to authenticate users by means of OTDI-managed “name.#” accounts, and provides access to useful institutional data about users at the time of login.

Note: The open source software used to deliver this service is called “Shibboleth,” and the service is frequently referred to by that less formal name.

This service offloads password traffic from application servers, provides an easy means of deploying the BuckeyePass multifactor authentication service and allows users to access multiple services without repeated prompts.

In addition to supporting campus-hosted applications, it supports secure access to off-campus “cloud-based” commercial services and to a variety of services operated for research, collaboration and instruction through our membership in the InCommon Federation.

The service is suitable for applications handling all data classifications (S1-S4) and assists in complying with ISCR requirements in IT5 and IT7.4.
